Rumour: Viacom set to buy Channel 5.

The Guardian is reporting that Richard Desmond is poised to announce the sale of Channel 5 to the US broadcaster that owns MTV for as much as £450m.

The US broadcaster, which owns channels including Nickelodeon and Comedy Central, is expected to announce the deal to the New York stock market on Thursday or Friday at the latest.

Viacom declined to comment. Northern & Shell, Channel 5's parent company, said no deal had yet been concluded.

Guardian: BBC3 closure 'not a foregone conclusion', warns trustee.

The closure of the BBC3 TV channel is far from certain, one of the corporation's trustee's has warned, stressing that the plans will be heavily scrutinised when they are submitted this summer.

Richard Ayre, speaking at an internal briefing following the publication of a BBC Trust report scrutinising the corporation's news and current affairs output, expressed scepticism that plans to put most BBC3 TV content online would prove effective.

Smallworld: Sky Movies Sci-Fi to have 'monster' week.

Virgin Media owned Smallworld has confirmed that Sky Movies Sci-Fi will have an dedicated week to all things monster to celebrate the premiere of Pacific Rim. 'Monster' week start May 12th and end on May 18th.

Due to ''Shop at Bid'' closing down we at Media Boy HQ now thinks that Local TV in Wales and Scotland can now launch on Freeview Channel 23.

Will Wright and Allan Graham from KPMG’s Restructuring practice were today appointed joint administrators to sit-up Limited, the digital broadcaster behind Price Drop and Bid TV.
The company’s two television channels, which broadcasted to more than 12 million homes with over 300 hours of live demonstrations each week, has ceased transmission, and the company’s online shop will close as the business ceases to trade with immediate effect. Unfortunately, a total of 229 employees, all of whom are based in London, have been made redundant as a result of the administration.

Base on information I have seen from a number of sources over the past week I can confirmed that Virgin Media may launch over 20 new channels by end of this year.

Guardian: Discovery withdraws bid for Channel 5.

The Guardian is today reporting that Discovery Communications has withdrawn its bid for Richard Desmond's Channel 5, which is thought to leave MTV owner Viacom as one of the few remaining potential buyers.

US factual broadcaster Discovery made a bid earlier this week in the second round of the acquisition process, but in the latest twist in the long-running Channel 5 sale saga has now dropped out of the running, MediaGuardian understands.

Richard Desmond’s Northern & Shell said it received a number of bids for Channel 5 and will evaluate them with advisers in the coming days.

“Certainly no deal has been done,” spokeswoman Mimi Turner said in an e-mail response to questions today.

Sky Movies Greats has been rebrand as Sky Movies Superheroes on Virgin Channel 410 and Smallworld Channel 309.

Also in HD on Virgin Channel 440 and Smallworld Channel 337.

Radio Today: Global confirms Heart expansion details.

Global Radio has confirmed that Heart Radio will be extend onto the Real Radio network of regional stations from Tuesday 6th May.

  • Virgin Media deal with CSC Media is maybe up this year - last deal signed in March 2010.
  • Due to Smallworld joining up with Virgin Media MB HQ think we may see more Sony Channels launching. With Virgin axing all the rest but keeping Sky1 +1 and MTV Channels (MTV +1 and MTV Classic).

Rumour: More Sky Sports HD Channels set to launch on Virgin Media? (UPDATED).

Technix over on Digital Spy posted on April 4th:

"Not really new channels but I've been told Sky Sports 3, 4 and F1 in HD maybe arriving soon on VM. As always wait for an official press release for confirmation."

Technix also added on April 10th:

"EDIT: Having a read of the latest annual report it is stated in there that the Premium carriage agreement expires on 31st March 2014. So it was a less than 1 year carriage agreement since July 2013. The carriage has obviously been extended now with continued presence of the Premiums on the platform (and ties in with what I was told about 3, 4 and F1 HD possibly arriving soon)."

Guardian Media: BT executive: 'count us out' of Channel 5 bid.

A senior BT executive has questioned the strategic value and £700m price tag for Richard Desmond's Channel 5, effectively ruling out the telecoms giant as a serious bidder for the broadcaster.

Bidders will have to "put up or shut up" with full, binding bids by 14 April, with Discovery and UKTV co-owner Scripps mooted as interested parties.
