London Evening Standard: BT Sport still has no Virgin deal in place.

Story from London Evening Standard:

BT was today forced to admit that it still has not done a deal with pay-TV giant Virgin Media to carry its new BT Sport channels, which begin broadcasting tomorrow.

The fact that BT has been unable to agree terms is a major blow to the telecoms giant as Virgin has almost 4 million pay-TV customers.

“We are open to doing it at the right price and talks continue,” said BT.

Media Boy insiders confirmed 'Talks still ongoing' with BT Sports.

I have just been given an update from an Virgin Media insiders.

All I was told was
''No news on BT Sports, negotiations are continuing.''

Broadcast: BT Sport set to strike Virgin Media carriage deal.

The following is thanks to Broadcastnow:
Virgin Media is poised to close a deal to carry BT Sport’s three sports channels on its cable TV platform, making them available to a further 4m potential customers.

The two companies have been in negotiations for a number of months but both have been keen to strike a deal ahead of BT Sport’s launch on Thursday 1 August.

BT Sport has the rights to the Scottish Premier League, which begins its season on Friday 2 August, and wanted to have carriage on Virgin in time for its first TV game - Partick Thistle versus Dundee United - so as not to alienate football fans who are VM customers.

The English Premier League season starts on August 17th.

One of the sticking points of negotiations has been whether Virgin will bundle the new channels in with its TV XL premium package - as was previously the case with ESPN - or whether it will charge for them as a standalone product.

It is not clear which route has been taken, but a Virgin Media spokesman said: We’re always looking bring the best possible value and choice of great quality content to our customers and we’re talking to BT about how we could potentially make the forthcoming BT Sport package available.”

Earlier this year, Virgin Media sent an online survey out to customers asking whether they would be willing to pay slightly more for their top package if it were to include Premier League football and Sky Atlantic, which could pave the way for this move.

BT Sport is being sold as a standalone channel on the Sky platform for £12 a month in SD and £15 a month in HD.

Virgin Media HD & TiVo Services: BT Sports announcement "coming soon".

The following is thanks to Virgin Media High Definition & TiVo Services blog.

I've now heard whispers from both BT and VM that a deal's pretty much done and an announcement is imminent.

I'd imagine the £12 for SD, £15 for HD, is what we'll see, same as Sky.

Pure speculation ahoy: an alternative would be that VM may subsidise it for the first three months and include it in TV XL.

I wouldn't have thought the cost to VM would be that high and it may prove a sufficient lure to retain or attract casual footie fans who don't want the full Sky Sports extravaganza.

Not sure how that would sit with BT but I would have thought it would be one of the options Virgin may consider.

I can now also confirm I got the same info on the BT announcement from my Virgin Media source last weekend.

"These new channels will allow us to showcase more of our programming at its very best."

The BBC has indicated it also wants to launch English regional variants of its existing BBC One HD service as well as Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland editions of BBC Two HD.

This would not need any of the new capacity. It would, however, need to be approved by the BBC Trust.

The following is thanks to Broadcastnow:

Cindy Rose, executive director of digital entertainment at the cable operator, will leave immediately.

She is mulling over opportunities elsewhere within John Malone’s Liberty Global but is not expected to take on a role in the short term.

Rose was responsible for Virgin Media’s tie-up with US set-top box manufacturer Tivo and also oversaw its TV Anywhere service.

She joined the company in November 2009 from The Walt Disney Company.

Jon James, director of broadband at Virgin Media, will take on the role on an interim basis before the company looks at its longer term options.

Separately, Virgin Media has brought in Stephane David as executive director of content.

He is currently vice president of programming at Liberty Global and will now be heading up Virgin Media’s relationships with channel operators and content providers.

He joined Liberty Global in 2005 and previously worked at the Canal+ Group, in the Netherlands and Belgium.

However, Virgin Media stressed that this new role does not signal a move back into content business, which it left when it sold its content and channels arm to Sky in 2010.
